View our calendar here
What should I bring to a park workday?
If you have them, bring a pair of work gloves. We do keep extra pairs of gloves on hand.
Also recommended are closed-toe shoes,
a wide-brimmed hat or cap,
and a refillable water bottle, although we also provide free bottles of water and Gatorade.
What should I wear?
It’s important that you wear closed-toe shoes.
You should consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat for sun protection, as well as sunscreen.
I’m part of a volunteer group. Can we all work together on the same team if we wish?
Yes.
Just let the folks who hand out job assignment sheets know that you all wish to be assigned to a single team. We will also appreciate if you let us know in advance the expected size of your group.
I need to have someone sign or stamp a form attesting to my work on behalf of the Land Park Volunteer Corps, who do I ask?
Once you’ve completed your work period and returned to Base Camp, ask one of the organizers to sign your form.
What if I need help of some kind, like with an injury, while at my work site?
First, talk to your team captain. If you wish, you can also call our Lead Coordinator, Craig Powell, at (916) 718-3030, who always carries a first aid kit.
What if I need water or Gatorade?
Talk to your team captain and he will call the Lead Coordinator who continually circulates among the worksites distributing cold water and Gatorade to each work site
What if I have to leave early?
Just notify your team captain
How long will we work for?
You will be assigned to a team and a team captain about 20 minutes or so after check-in.
You will work 2.5 hours and then return to Base Camp at approximately 11:00am (summer schedule) or noon (spring and fall schedule)
What are the spring and fall months (with 9:00am start-times) and what are the summer months (with 8:00am start times)?
March, April, May are our spring months, October and November are our fall months, and June, July, August, and September are our summer months.
Does the Corps take a winter hiatus?
We do. The Land Park Volunteer Corps takes a winter hiatus during the months of December, January, and February each year, when there is very little growth in the park.
Does participating on any particular work teams require upper body strength?
Yes, the Pond Patrol Team (which cleans the walkways surrounding the park ponds using high pressure hoses) must haul around long, somewhat heavy, thick water hoses, which requires some upper body strength.
Does the Land Park Volunteer Corps work in the rain?
The Land Park Volunteer Corps works in a light rain or drizzling rain, but we do not work in steady or heavy rains.
Will you let us know if an upcoming park workday is postponed due to rain?
Yes. If you provide us with your email address, we will notify you if an upcoming workday will be postponed due to rain, or you can call Craig Powell, the Corps’ Lead Coordinator, at (916) 718-3030 for a rain update.
What happens when a park workday is postponed due to rain?
If we cancel a workday due to rain, we postpone one week to the following Saturday, same start time. If a postponed workday is rained out, we cancel the workday for that month (which has happened only once in the 15 years of the Corps’ existence).
